How to find a supportive nursing bra

How to find a supportive nursing bra

Are your other nursing bras falling short?

Are you tired of feeling uncomfortable and unsupported in your current nursing bras?

Finding a supportive nursing bra can help alleviate back pain, sore breasts and help you feel more confident.

When you’re looking for a supportive nursing bra, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Take your measurements. It’s always important to know what size of maternity or nursing bra you should be wearing. We will explain more about this below.
  2. Look for a supportive nursing bra that is ALSO comfortable. This means NO UNDERWIRE. Underwire can provide support, but it may be at the cost of comfort. When you are breastfeeding or pumping, you don’t want to wear nursing bras that are uncomfortable or can cause problems like blocked milk ducts and mastitis. This is why it’s so important to avoid ill-fitted nursing bras or those with underwire in them.
  3. Look at the nursing bra’s features: Does it have a wide underbust band? Is it adjustable? Does it have adjustable shoulder straps and an adjustable back (hook and eye closure)? Does it have wider straps and do the straps and fabric look comfortable? Features such as wider straps, a wide underbust band and full adjustability will make it more likely that the nursing bra will feel supportive and be a comfortable fit.
  4. Read the reviews - has this been a supportive nursing bra for previous customers? What complaints did they have about it? What did they love about it?

Taking Your Measurements

How to find the right fit. Here are some helpful tips in finding the correct fit for your new supportive nursing bra!

Step 1: First, start by finding a flexible measuring tape.

Step 2: Next, measure around your underbust (just below your bust).

Try to relax.

Don’t hold your breath or suck in while measuring.

Take the measurement a couple of times and use the average.

Write it down.

Step 3: Measure around the largest part of your bust.

Wear a bra that you would typically wear, but make sure it isn’t padded.

Measure a couple of times.

Use the average measurement.

Write it down.

Step 4: Last (but not least) - Choose a nursing bra that is adjustable

Breast size fluctuates throughout life, but especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

It’s important to choose a supportive nursing bra that allows you to adjust the band size as well as the shoulder straps.

This will allow the nursing bra to adjust with you in pregnancy as well as postpartum so you can feel more comfortable over a longer period of time.
